Hello! My name is Mary Clare Walters. I am a wife, a lawyer, and most importantly, a Catholic. I went to law school to fight the good pro-life fight and ended up discovering the entire bioethics field (in my very last semester, of course.) During school, I joined the Law Review and wrote an article arguing for a constitutional amendment protecting the right to life from the moment of conception and recognizing fetal personhood, comparing the pro-life fight for personhood to the fight for personhood for African Americans before and after the Civil War. The language surrounding both fights for personhood is astoundingly similar, and slavery in the United States shows exactly why a state-by-state approach to life and personhood issues can’t work. That published article can be found here: https://www.memphis.edu/law/documents/walters_b3.pdf.
I found my passion in bioethics. I also found that not very many people had a strong understanding of objective bioethical principles, opting instead for a more subjective approach. As someone who firmly believes in objective truth, not to mention a member of the Church that founded the bioethics field in the first place, I realized that there is a need for a basic understanding of the principles that guide medical and healthcare decisions made by all parties involved - doctors, patients, family members, etc. So that’s my principle aim here.
It’s not all gloomy bioethics, though. I also intend to use this platform as a way to grow in my faith and discuss cultural and political issues, as well. Basically, anything that interests me is fair game.
Hopefully any readers I have will be interested too. I can’t wait to connect!
